What is Carolina Christian?

Update March 2024: We have a patron saint! We still don’t have a full name, but it will be a variation on something something St. Apollonius the Apologist something something. I’ve stuck “The Apollonian Forum” up top as the temporary newsletter title, but am holding off on updating the subdomain until we decide what we want there.

—> FYI this newsletter is the public face of group, for sharing events that are open to anybody. When we meet at someone’s home, those details don’t go out to the whole internet, sorry.

“Carolina Christian” was the initial placeholder name for our local group in formation. (We are in the Carolinas.) The group exists to provide a place where Christian believers of any denomination can meet each other and enjoy interesting intellectual conversation on a wide variety of topics.

Since we are still in the organizational phase, details are strictly tentative.

Who Would Enjoy This Group?

If this describes you, consider coming out sometime:

You’re a believer in Jesus Christ. You’re one of those Christians who thinks the Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection are actual historic events. Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, really is the Savior our fallen humanity needed. Heaven is a real place. Your soul really will spend eternity either in perfect happiness with God in Heaven, or else in horrendous desolation and suffering apart from God in Hell. Your relationship with God is your top priority (even though you often fall short of the mark).

You believe in objective truth. The life of the mind, for you, is not a contest of egos but a pleasurable way of learning more about reality.

You are comfortable around Christians of a variety of denominations. We are Catholic, Orthodox, and Evangelicals who do hold to our various respective denominational or personal doctrines, but who enjoy the company of our brothers and sister in Christ across denominations.

You enjoy intellectual conversation on a wide variety of topics. We are not here to be your Bible study or Catechism class. We aren’t here to obsess over one pet topic. This group aims to be a place where Christians can talk about any topic at all — science, business, social issues, family life, you-name-it — from an intelligent laymen’s perspective. On a given evening’s topic we’ll have a subject-area expert to provide an initial presentation, but there’s no expectation that everyone in the audience comes into the conversation having previously studied that topic.

You’re comfortable being challenged. Whether you’re the expert of the evening or coming at the topic with the freshest of all perspectives, your number one goal is the mutual quest for truth.
